Today was the day I was supposed to go into the lab to get some blood draws and urine samples for the All of Us research project.

In general this is a pretty simple process:

  • You register online
  • Fill in some questionnaires about your life
  • Sign up for an appointment with All of Us
  • Attend the appointment

And the process itself is fine. However, I was perhaps ten minutes late to my appointment and perhaps 10 minutes after I’d checked in, the fire alarm went off. It’s interesting how these things go.

First the alarm went off with a soft beeping noise and the flashers, then a recorded voice message saying “Code Red Floor 4 Medical Building” started on repeat over the other audio, and then a human came on the line saying something unintelligible about a “false alarm”, and then a prerecorded text instructing us to take the stairs in the direction that the floor warden tells us to go.
