In school in India, we learned in Turbo C++ and I thought only IDEs could produce 'programs'. Then one issue of Resonance https://www.ias.ac.in/listing/issues/reso mentioned Red Hat and we got Shrike on these 3 black CDs. Mindblowing to discover you could just write into a text file and use a tool called gcc to make a program.
