Yesterday, an unusual thing happened. First, it looks like SBF of FTX got access to the Internet, which was somewhat surprising. Amusingly, he decided to use the opportunity to Linkedin-post palaver about the DOGE firings.

Someone then used the opportunity of his return (and presumably limited use of the Internet) to take over a government account and rename it to SBF_DOGE, announce a meme coin, and then rug pull the pump before the tweets were deleted.

The way it seems to have worked is:

  1. Someone gains access to the C_Guardiagrele Twitter account which has a grey check
  2. They rename it to SBF_DOGE and seem to retain the grey check
  3. They launch this memecoin and then dump on everyone buying
  4. Someone named "far" takes over the account and deletes the tweets

The tweet caused prices on Polymarket for the SBF pardon to spike up into the 60¢ range per contract from the usual 4¢ so some guys fluked into some cash there by accident. Once upon a time a long time ago, I believed that cryptocurrencies were actually going to open up a new trend in financialization of things and that that would enable new kinds of monetization. But here we are in 2025 and the only reliable indirect means of monetization are advertisements.

I thought I'd keep this around because I can never find things that happened anymore since search engines don't seem to be effective anymore.
