It's an ethnicity-by-ethnicity breakdown of who marries who for some of the biggest groups, counting just those born in the U.S.

Obviously, the initial hard work here has been done by the author of that tweet, Crémieux, and his post has a lot of detail where he goes into how you can reproduce things and what assumptions he made and all that. It's quite cool.

Not enough Taiwanese to find - Julie and I are a rare pairing

It's a nice idea of what to do with the data but I wanted to get a slightly different view of it in the classic heatmap style, for instance, or look at the biggest gender differences. In the past, that would have taken so long to do, but now I just set Opus 5 on the task and it gave me a pretty cool interface that I could use to play around with the various options:

• remove Hispanic as a race - treat it as an ethnicity and use their self-identified race as the choice
• separate Taiwanese from Chinese
• separate multi-racial families

One thing I was curious about was the percentage of couples that would be Chindians-ish. Lately, as Julie and I walk around San Francisco we feel like we've seen many Chinese/Indian couples, usually a Chinese woman with an Indian man - like us. Surely these would show up in the 2023 ACS! But it turns out that we're still relatively rare as a combination and given the sample sizes involved there's no way to actually tease us out of the data.

Anyway, here's the visualization in an iframe or click through to look at what Claude Opus 5 built after pulling the Census data. It seems to line up for the most part with Cremieux's original chart so it must be some combination of the parameters chosen that causes the discrepancy. Very interesting charts!
