Citation Laundering is the practice of taking a low-likelihood statement and citing it through an increasingly more reliable chain of sources until the claim looks like it is reliably sourced and therefore unlikely to be false.

My first encounter with the concept was in Citogenesis where I discovered that recidivism rates were reported incorrectly or with clarifying context in comparative settings.
