How is your experience using Mediawiki as your blog?

The primary reason I chose it is that I wanted well-established wiki semantics for others to come and edit and so on. Otherwise, I think I would have chosen a different platform.
However, one thing I find that is quite nice is that with a modern LLM it is quite easy to theme the blog and also quite easy to write custom code that helps.
The biggest downside of using MediaWiki for this is that I had the unfortunate experience of being completely invisible to search engines. You need to populate quite a few things to make it work:
  • the various meta descriptions
  • the JSON-LD blocks
  • precompute pages so that first load doesn't slow down the crawler
I forget the rest of the things but that was a big gotcha.
Another downside is that Mediawiki's authoring frontend is not as pleasant as other things. But again for this I have a custom piece of software (see The rise of personal software) that makes this quite painless. It fills in the meta descriptions, uploads the images at the end (after resizing them and turning them to webp), and gives me a nice review page where I can catch grammar and reasoning errors.
